Celebrity Summit: The new Edge of cruising
All aboard and welcome to the Celebrity Revolution, a $500 million dollar upgrade across the fleet, and the most extensive modernization effort, guaranteed to turn heads. The revolution started with the launch of Celebrity’s newest ship, the Celebrity Edge, which is the first, in the new Edge Class of ships, designed to shatter expectations when it comes to cruising. The Revolution continued with the renovation of Celebrity Millennium and of course now the Celebrity Summit.
I had the pleasure of sailing on the Celebrity Summit over the past weekend and I can attest to the dramatic transformation of the ships appearance. It’s no secret that I think cruising is the best way to travel, waking up somewhere new each morning is so exciting and knowing that I don’t have to lug my suitcase around is even better. Booking a cruise allows you to maximize your time on vacation and avoid all the stressful aspects of seeing multiple destinations in a short period of time.
I have cruised with a range of companies however this was my first time on a Celebrity ship and I have to say, I was absolutely blown away. The makeover is truly a work of art, I loved everything about it. When most people talk about cruising the words tacky and outdated are usually thrown around. The Celebrity Summit I can safely say with confidence is the best looking ship I have ever had the pleasure of sailing on. The design is modern, fresh and rivals any high end resort, don’t believe me, take a look for yourself.
The Cabins and Suites
While on-board the Celebrity Summit I stayed in a Veranda Room which comes with a private balcony. There is nothing not to love about the new design of the cabins, with luxurious cashmere mattresses, state-of-the-art finishes, and a very modern design, you will feel like you are in a five star resort.
Looking for something a little more, check out the newly designed suites which are absolutely stunning and include an exclusive sanctuary called The Retreat Sundeck. In addition suite guests have access to Luminae a private dining experience with uniquely crafted menus by Celebrities Michelin-starred chef. Still not impressed guests also get access to The Retreat Lounge, a beautifully designed space which features complimentary drinks and snacks 24/7.
The Restaurants
I don’t know about you, but in my opinion the dining experience on any ship can make or break your on-board experience. Celebrity has really outdone itself on this front, offering a total of nine restaurants, you are sure to find something to love while on-board. The restaurants on-board include; the main dining room (Cosmopolitan), Tuscan Grill, Sushi on Five, Luminae (for suite guests only), Qsine, the Oceanview Café, Blu (exclusively for AquaClass guests), Cade al Bacio and the Spa Café.
What impressed me the most was the modern design of the Oceanview Café which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Typically this dining experience on any ship is café style and very casual, however with the modernization and updated design it doesn’t feel like a buffet but more like a beautifully decorated restaurant in any major city, see for yourself.
in addition to the nine restaurants on-board the Celebrity Summit also boasts a mixture of six bars, clubs and lounges. My personal favorite was the Martini Bar, sit back, relax and let the talented bartenders put on a high-energy show for you, while they prepare an intriguing menu of classic and contemporary cocktails, served on an ice-topped bar (yes you heard that right the bar is ice cold). If you are going to book a cruise and you plan to drink a reasonable amount while on-board I always recommend purchasing the beverage package, it typically turns out to be the most economical depending on how much you drink.
The Amenities
Read to relax? On Deck 10 you will find the two main saltwater pools as well as the heated indoor pool located in the Solarium. There are four hot tubs dotted around the pools as well as plenty of lounge chairs.
In addition to the amazing pool area on Deck 10 there is also a full sized basketball court, and outdoor cinema area on Deck 12.
The Entertainment
As with any major cruise line the Celebrity Summit offers live entertainment daily while on-board. What sets it apart from all other industry partners is the out of the box thinking when it comes to the entertainment program. Celebrity has recently partner with The American Ballet Theater to bring ballet to the sea, something that has never been done before. Launching across the fleet this year, the partnership is something that has been 2 years in the making and has been well worth the wait. While on-board I was lucky enough to meet both principle dancers and take part in a barre class (eek! dream come true) as well as view one of their first performances at sea which was absolutely spectacular. Ballet is hard enough, in a theater, on dry land, but imagine performing on a moving ship, it was indescribable.
In addition to this there was a performance by a hip-hop violinist which was bold new and exciting to watch. Overall the entertainment on-board was modern, daring and spectacular, a theme that seems to be echoed across the ship.
In conclusion, if you have never cruised before, if you have had a bad experience cruising in the past, if you want to try something new or you just love cruising and you want an exciting new experience, I would highly recommend booking a cabin on the Celebrity Summit. This ship really is for everyone and will not disappoint.
